Likelihood that I have HHT?
« on: December 20, 2009, 04:13:54 PM »
Hello,

My mother has HHT, with all the usual side effects - the massive nosebleeds, lots of red spots, the works. I am the oldest of her three children, and of all of us, we assumed that my younger sister (who has always had periodic, seemingly causeless nosebleeds) had most likely inherited it, and that my brother and I hadn't. However, over the last couple of weeks I have begun to expect that I may in fact have it. I will be 19 in a few months, so if I understand correctly, I would be on the young side to be developing telangiectases; that being said, I have noticed three or four small (none bigger than the head of a pin) red spots on my hands. I have only ever had one nosebleed in my entire life.

Considering all I have mentioned, what would you say the likelihood is that I have inherited my mom's HHT?

Hi

The best thing that you could do, is ask your doc to refer you for genetics testing.  I did that for my children and it turned out that one out of the three have inherited it from me.  Mine first manefested when I was just 7 years old.  I don't think there is a particular age for it, except the fact that it is progressive, so gets worse as you get older.
