Discussion / Fundraising for HHT
« Last post by Tracey on November 22, 2011, 10:07:04 AM »
I am once again laying in a hospital bed connected to a bag of blood. I am back in for a couple of pints of the red stuff!

As usual, laying here bored stupid. Was thinking about fundraising for either research or equipment or for training of a and e staff etc. I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions?

Tracey ;-)

Discussion / Soy isoflavones useful for HHT?
« Last post by labgirl on November 18, 2011, 09:04:51 PM »
This is an older paper (1998). I'll continue to search for more studies along these lines. Anyone else have info along these lines?

Discussion / caffeine and hemorrhagic stroke due to HHT
« Last post by labgirl on November 11, 2011, 11:45:20 PM »
Folks, am reading conflicting reports on what effect moderate caffeine consumption has (if any) on people such as myself who suffer from multiple intracranial hemorrhages. One report I read states that caffeine decreases blood flow and intracranial pressure (a good thing), while other reports state that caffeine increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (esp. in women). I can't get any answers from my neuro people on this either. Have had many small bleeds (51 yr. old female, otherwise very fit and healthy), and two significant intracranial hemorrhages in the past five years ... the latest one 3 weeks back, leaving me with left leg/left arm "phantom" sensations and some uncoordinated movement. If someone who is knowledgeable about the caffeine subject can weigh in that would be great. I've already given up my daily stout and would also have no problem giving up my 2 cups of coffee daily if it would help cut down on these bleeds.

Hi Brian, Must be getting on six months with Tamoxifen, and still only 1 or 2 very minor bleeds.
Hope you are doing well

Discussion / Thalidomide for HHT
« Last post by Jase on October 02, 2011, 10:50:25 PM »
Hi,

I have read some articles about Thalidomide being used to help with nosebleeds in HHT.  It appears to have similar effects as Tamoxifen in reducing vascular growth.

Has anybody been prescribed it? And has it worked?

The research has been carried out in the USA post 2009.

Here is a link to an article

Hi,

I am new to this site, but not new to HHT.  I was diagnosed with it in 1992 just on the symptoms alone with no genetic testing.  I had the nosebleeds, red blood spots and pavm's.

I have had the pavm's embolised twice at the Hammersmith Hospital, 1993 & 2008.

A couple of years after I was diagnosed Dr Shovlin, from the Hammersmith, tested various members of my family and located the faulty gene, it came from my Grandmother.

From the information that you give it sounds like HHT.  I know it was in April that you posted, so how have you got on?  You need to push the Dr's and get a referral to a HHT specialist treatment centre, Hull or the Hammersmith in London.

The problem with the disorder is that most Dr's have no idea what it is.

Discussion / Re: Has anyone lost their job because of their HHT?
« Last post by terry on September 12, 2011, 01:53:54 PM »
I lost my job age 19 as I had a bad nosebleed!

My supervisor turned white & looked like he was about to faint!

Officially I was told my work wasn't up to standard, but unofficially it was because he was terrified of the sight of blood!

That was about fifty years ago!
