I had some time on my hands so I looked into that DLA query, and, if it’s any help at all to anyone, this was my uptake on how it all works:
To qualify for DLA you must:
1. Claim it!
And
2. Be between 16 and 64
And
3. Be resident for at least 26 of the last 52 weeks
And satisfy at least one of these conditions for at least three months before and at least three months after the date of your claim:
~ Need some form of attention or looking out for during the day or night.
Or
~ Be physically or mentally unable (given the ingredients) to prepare a cooked meal for yourself
Or
~ Be unable, or virtually unable, to walk unaided
Or
~ Be BOTH deaf and blind
Or
~ Be mentally impaired with severely limiting or dangerous behavioural problems
Or
~ Be terminally ill.
# Who Decides???
The DLA advisory board produce a handbook called the “Disability Handbook” (strangely enough) available at:
Disability Alliance UK (United Kingdom) Home Page If your “condition” does not fit neatly into one or other of their categories, then the “decision maker” may ask your doctor and or your consultant to complete what they call a “factual report”. If still not entirely satisfied they can arrange for a DWP (Dept. of Works & Pensions) approved doctor to prepare a medical report based on a medical examination carried out in your home.
#How long for a decision

Well they reckon to be done with your claim within 39 working days of receipt of same.(don’t ask me where that number came out of!)
